BANDA ACEH, Indonesia - Indonesian police say they
have detained 21 Vietnamese who illegally logged a rare type of wood in a
protected forest.
Local police chief Lt. Col. Trisno Rianto says the Vietnamese were caught as they left the forest in Aceh province on Sunday with a vehicle filled with agarwood.
Rianto said Monday that six of the suspects will be arrested for illegal logging while the 15 others will be handed over to immigration officials for violating their tourist visas.
He says the Vietnamese had been collecting agarwood in the forest since early last month.
Agarwood is relatively rare and is highly valued for its dark aromatic resin, which is used in incense and perfumes. [Associated Press]
